Impressionism, a historical reconstruction:
Pierre-Isidore Bureau
(1822-1876)
An impression of his pictures at the
1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874
What pictures did Bureau show at the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition?
Pierre(-Isidore) Bureau showed 4 paintings (catalogue numbers 33-35bis) at the ‘1st impressionist’ expositions. Just one picture owned by the Musée d’Orsay is given as suggestion. This work for a large part fits a description of Prouvaire (R90I,p35). The other 3 paintings are not described and stay obscure. I found just 8 works of Bureau, so there is not much to choose from. Still, I will render suggestions, also using works of other artists and photo’s to compare, so you have any impression of all the 4 paintings he exhibited. See link for an account and for the subscriptions. For explanations and sources see at the bottom of the main page about Pierre-Isidore Bureau. Note: If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a small slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!
